This Design-Biuld project is part of a 10-mile linear park, urban trail, and living art destination that will transform the land below Miami's Metrorail. Work on this segment will begin in 2021 and end in 2023. Once completed, Phase II will extend the Underline’s reach from SW 13th Street to SW 19th Avenue.
The Underline consists of a 10-mile multi-modal transportation corridor and urban world class trail providing for separate off-street bicycle and pedestrian paths, landscaping, lighting, street furniture and amenities such as gathering spaces for events, recreational fields, kiosks, gardens, etc. It is part of Miami-Dade County’s “Parks and Open Space Master Plan” adopted by the Board of County Commissioners in 2008 and incorporated into the comprehensive development master plan in 2009.
Once completed, The Underline will be the primary bicycle and pedestrian connection from Downtown Miami to the SW Miami-Dade neighborhoods and serve as a link and regional spine in a regional network of existing and proposed trails. The Underline is the vision of “Friends of The Underline” (Friends), a non-profit organization advocating to transform the underutilized land below Miami’s Metrorail into a 10-mile neighborhood park, urban trail and canvas for artistic expression to create a safer, healthier, more connected, mobile, and engaged community. That vision was carried forward by the international landscape architecture and urban design firm of James Corner Field Operations (JCFO) and developed into “The Underline Framework Plan” (“Master Plan”) which is referenced throughout this document and is provided in Appendix 21. An electronic (PDF) copy of the Master Plan will be available during the procurement process by the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW). More information about The Underline is available from the website for The Underline.
